Seabear and the musical journey into the dream world

One year ago I stumbled upon an Icelandic band and fell in love with them instantly. They call themselves Seabear and they are labelled as an indie-folk band and, sometimes, as an experimental indie band. However, I would dare to say that Seabear are by themselves a brand new music genre: a Nordic warm dreamy music, if you'd like. I haven't found a dreamier music than this yet (except maybe Sigur Ros', but in a different kind of way).

All the seven members of the band are multi-instrumentalists, their tracks displaying a wide range of instruments, from acoustic/ electric/ bass guitar to keyboards and drums, from fiddle to trumpet and harmonica. Even if they come from Iceland, all the lyrics of their songs are in English.

Their first album - "The Ghost that Carried Us Away" - was released in 2007 and featured 12 enchanted tracks, filled with dreamy rhythms and nostalgic lyrics. The melodic line is soft, fluid and harmonious. For starters, I would recommend you my favourite song from this album (and their most popular song until now) - "I Sing, I Swim". I easily find myself caught up in this hypnotic, almost whispered, out-of-this-world music:

From the same album, I also love "Arms", "Cat Piano" and "Owl Waltz", even if the album as a whole is an underrated refined masterpiece, a symphony of sounds and sweet words meant to lift your feet off the ground and take you to the stars above.

Through this article, I wanted to share with you my passion for Seabear and to spread the word of their recent album release: "We Built a Fire". The first single of this album, "I'll Build You a Fire", is a bit more fast-paced than we were used to, but the specific Seabear fragrance is still there, vibrating, breathing, whispering, lyrical, tender, rich in sounds, launching us into a new emotional journey.

I'll build you a fire
I'll build you a fire if you sing
in the night
falling down.

We need something to disconnect us from this too often colourless reality.
We need a warm and secure ocean to dive in, once in a while.
We need to close our eyelids and dream, once in a while.
Those are the moments when we need the spellbinding music of Seabear.
